Our Name

The name The Quarry was born out of a number of “God-incidences" that helped us to better develop our purpose and mission. The mother or umbrella ministry remains Oracle House, but The Quarry is the church arm of the ministry; Oracle House has had, and we believe will yet have again, other arms.

A quarry is an open pit where materials like limestone, marble, or granite for example, are dug out from its depths to be used for the purpose of constructing buildings or other structures. One definition of a quarry is “a place where stone, sand, etc. is dug out of the ground for use as building material.”

During an inspiring bible study session that we had some years ago on Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem; we began to talk about the church being the New Testament temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16 & 6:19). Using scriptures from 1 Kings 6 where Solomons’ temple was being built, we read, The stones used in the construction of the Temple were finished at the quarry… 1 Kings 6:7 (NLT)

When we read this, one of the participants in the bible study exclaimed, “if the church is the temple, then the quarry is the world”!!   The Great Commission of our Lord Jesus Christ says to,

"Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Mark 16:15 (NLT)

In 1 Kings 5:15 & 17 (NLT)   Solomon also had 70,000 common laborers, 80,000 quarry workers in the hill country, 80,000 quarry workers in the hill country,   At the king's command, they quarried large blocks of high-quality stone and shaped them to make the foundation of the Temple.

We believe that at The Quarry church we are quarry workers, labouring at the rockface of The Quarry to dig deep and find and transform lives by building strong foundations in Jesus Christ; our bedrock, foundations, and Cornerstone being the love, grace and truth of God and the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. We aspire to be a beacon of hope and transformation serving our community like Jesus did. Just as the Solomon’s temple in 1 Kings was a place for communal worship and the glory of God, we aim to create an environment where all are welcome, accepted and encouraged to develop and grow in their faith.

From first planting Oracle House Christian Church in late 2012 we had always felt the Lord moving in our hearts that there would be a shift in the name to better define our mission, purpose, and brand. The Lord gave us a word in 2015 that our church was not to be just another place where Christians came and went from but a place for non-Christians to meet Christ, “the unchurched church!”

So, we are very excited to share our new name “The Quarry” as one of the arms under the charity Oracle House Trust.
